Koala

Koalas are a common sight on Kangaroo Island

The diverse vegetation - ranging from coastal heath, titree swamps, eucalypt forest and dense groves of acacia - is home to Kangaroo Island's unique fauna. There are koalas, KI kangaroos and tammar wallabies, echidnas and heath goannas. At night, brush-tailed possums and wallabies come out to feed en-masse.

The bird life includes a wide range of Australian parrots, plovers, wrens, finches, honeyeaters, kookaburras, magpies and many more. Listen to the call of the mopoke in the still of the night, when the flocks of galahs and cockatoos have settled down after sunset. Seabirds abound, majestic sea eagles frequently soar above the property. Offshore are reefs and grottos of soft corals and marine flora in crystal-clear waters. The ocean abounds with pods of dolphin, diverse fish species and crustacea, starfish, leafy seadragons. Occasionally one can sight a seal at dusk, returning home after fishing on the reef off the Middle River headland.
